Resume Writing

Writing a winning resume.
It all starts with your resume – a short, concise and highly valuable look at your professional life on paper. In nearly all cases, your resume will have to compete strongly with a host of other resumes. Your "life on paper" will co-exist in a stack of others – all vying to grab the attention of the person who's job it is to wean through the masses and glean out the winner. Hopefully, that's you.

A few tips:

  • Stay focused. Remember that your resume is a marketing tool, not a detailed description of your personal and professional life.
  • Sell yourself. Don't just itemize your work history, describe how you perform and what you can bring to a new employer.
  • List accomplishments. Create a clear, concise picture of what you've done.
  • State your objective. Accurately describe what you want to do in your professional world.
  • Keep it short. Fluff can hurt you.
  • Stay recent. It's rarely ever necessary to go back beyond 10-15 years.
  • Be relevant. Avoid listing things like your hobbies or religious affiliation.
  • Focus on information. Recruiters are often annoyed or sidetracked by fancy paper or overly complex formats.
  • Keep your reader in mind. Answer questions before they need to be asked – if your name is Jamie, don't keep them wondering if you're a mister or miss.
  • Create an advantage. Describe relevant volunteer or civic work if it pertains to the job you seek; sell your winning attributes.
