Manufacturing is often underestimated and misunderstood. When many people think about manufacturing jobs, they envision assembly-line work in a dark factory with low pay. When in fact, today’s manufacturing is modern and sophisticated – the facilities are well-lit and use high-tech processes, and career opportunities are expansive and well-paying!
There are a number of reasons to consider building a career in manufacturing. Let’s begin by debunking two common myths:
Myth #1: Manufacturing jobs are low-paying. According to the U.S Commerce Department, manufacturing workers earn 17 percent more in wages and benefits over their careers. The average annual salary is more than you might think; according to the National Association of Manufacturers, the average worker earned $77,506 annually in 2013, including pay and benefits.
Myth #2: There aren’t many opportunities in manufacturing. A number of manufacturing positions are high in demand, including: engineering managers, welders, sales people, production managers, and machinists. What’s more, the talent shortage is expected to increase. With the average age of manufacturing workers at 57, many will be retiring over the next 10 years. Yet, statistics show that there’s not a workforce ready to replace them.
Find an Opportunity
A simple way to get connected to job opportunities in manufacturing is to partner with a staffing agency. One way that Pro Staff finds new job opportunities is by partnering with Dream It. Do It. Dream It., a national manufacturing careers recruitment effort to attract workers to fill the approximately 600,000 open manufacturing jobs in the U.S.
Pro Staff will be working closely with Minnesota Dream It. Do It. this fall as a sponsor of their upcoming Statewide Tour of Manufacturing. This October, manufacturers from across the state will open their doors to offer tours and meet with students and professionals looking to make a career change.
If you would like to see what manufacturing has to offer you and you live in Minnesota, we encourage you to participate in this free tour. It’s a great opportunity to check out exciting new career opportunities, see what modern manufacturing looks like, and learn more about manufacturers in your community.
